DJ Mixer is a free DJing app for the iPad. The newest version comes with twelve free songs to work with and you can upload 4 of your own for free. However, if you want unlimited library importing you will have to purchase one of the upgrades. There are other upgrades as well like the ability to you use headphones and additional effects packs. Upgrades range from $3 to $10 and are available for purchase in the app store.

Some of the notable features in DJ Mixer Pro include: auto mixing of your playlist, which crossfades the transition from one song to the next; beat matching and syncing functions; tempo and pitch manipulation independently of each other; a 2 channel mixer with master fader; scratch parameters and built-in effects. There have been some instability issues but this update is supposed to fix most of those problems.

If you’re searching for an easy to use remixing app – DJ Mixer Pro might just be what you’re looking for. Its’ free so check it out.

Bander for iPad

Developed by Musicsoft Arts, Bander is a free music discovery and sharing app for the iPad. Easily share songs with friends via Facebook, Twitter, and Email. Enjoy live radio.

Become an active member of the Bander Community and win free downloads. Browse through songs you like and get instant information about that band or artist – bio, websites, music videos, etc..

Set up your own Bander profile and promote yourself as an artist. In conjunction with iTunes this gives you the potential to market yourself and generate sales on iOS platforms.

The experience is unique, the approach is innovative and the app is free (but I believe there are add on features that cost money). Never has it been so easy to get connected with and discover new artist. Its smooth integration of all social media networks put this app in a league of its own. If you’re looking for creative ways to discover new music or promote your own music – I highly recommend you check out Bander from Musicsoft Arts.

BeatPad 3.3 for iPad

Here’s a snippet of a cool beat made using BeatPad 3.3

BeatPad 3.3 ($6.99) is a drum machine with a built-in 4 track audio recorder for you iPad. The newest version comes with more sounds than its predecessor and even boasts a slightly cheaper price tag (supposedly).

It’s cool that you can type up and save lyrics to a particular beat right within the program. This is great when you get some quality lyric ideas while you’re working on your production, which often does happen.

You also have some great exporting and sharing options in being able to upload your work directly to Youtube and Facebook. BeatPad comes with quantize capabilities and a built-in sound library to get you up and going. The stock sounds are decent and it seems that XME will continue to expand this library. This is promising because it’s the one thing I think BeatPad needs most – a bigger and better sound library.

It’s worth mentioning that customer service is pretty good too.

BeatPad 3.3 is a quality music production app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. I would recommend it to anyone looking to make music on one of these platforms.

Kazaa Releases Music Streaming App for iPad

Kazaa is a company most known for its role in peer-to-peer file sharing in the years past. However, with a push for new copyright laws and internet censorship to prevent illegal sharing, the company has been forced to rework most of its operations and services – I believe its older P2P software is even banned in some countries.

I would be lying to you if I said I wasn’t surprised that the company has survived this long as many of its competitors have failed to do so.

With that being said, Kazaa shows a willingness to push forward as they dabble in the world of iOS with their music streaming app for iPad.

The app is free but if you want unlimited amounts of music the monthly subscription will cost you $10. The interface is sleek and easy on the the eyes and the app does a good job of competing with its new iOS counterparts.

Morphwiz for iPad

Developed by Jordan Rudess of Wizdom Music, Morphwiz ($10) offers a unique approach to sound creation and performance. Notes are represented by a series of vertical lines and you play the instrument by touching or sliding your fingers across them – much like a Continuum Fingerboard.

Some of its features include: the ability to morph between different waveforms, specific scale selections (never play a bad note), and you can play chords as well. It comes with a few performance controls like octave shifting, pitch locking, and recording. You’ll also a get a few effects like stereo chorus, tremolo, and some delay. There are some built-in preset sounds, but in my opinion, they just aren’t that great.

While the Morphwiz is fun to play with and very easy on the eyes I would only consider this as a professional tool if I wanted to create some quirky sounds or effects.

If you’re looking for a unique way to toy around with some weir sounds then this is an app you should look into.

touchAble for iPad

touchAble was developed by AppBc and it turns your iPad into a controller for Ableton Live. This is a really cool app for any DJ or producer with an iPad and Ableton. You can mix, edit, and manipulate your Ableton arrangements on the fly. It comes with built-in FX, velocity sensitive drum pads and keyboards, automapping, transport and clip functions and much more. Other great components to this app are its Wi-Fi capabilities – allowing you to use this app anywhere within the realm of a Wi-Fi signal. This means you don’t have to be glued to your computer and that you can take advantage of the iPads ability to be a mobile device- although there is some latency involved.

Is one iPad not enough for you? Incorporate a second iPad to maximize the apps functionality.

There are lots of cool things about touchAble that make it worth the money, but it is somewhat expensive in the world of apps, ringing in at a lofty $25.

Nonetheless, AppBC has a solid music application for the iPad in this program. Be sure to check it out.

Decoded by Jay-Z for iPad

Decoded is unique and unlike most of the apps we cover on our site. It’s an interactive experience that centers around the life of famous Brooklyn rapper Jay-Z. Get access to Jay’s greatest hits, interactive lyrics with his own thoughts and side notes, never seen before video footage and frequent updates of Jay’s latest moves.

The standard version costs $4.99 and gives you ten Jay-Z tracks of your choice, but you can upgrade to the full version and unlock all thirty-six of the tracks.

For the serious reader, I would recommend the book, but the app is truly a unique adventure.

Want to learn about and study one of the greatest rappers of all time? Want to be inspired by a great rags-to-riches success story? Step into the shoes of Jay-Z the Hip Hop mogul with Decoded for iPad (also available for iPod Touch and iPhone).

Pianist Pro for iPad

Pianist Pro is a virtual piano for the iPad.  Its’ predecessor/counterpart – Pianist is a well known app for the iPhone and MooCow takes it even further with the iPad.  It comes with 16 different instruments, an arpeggiator, a drum machine and on-board effects.  Virtual instruments range from drums to synths and more.  You also get a sustain pedal and velocity based key striking to give your creations some realism.  Select a musical scale or define your own and never play a bad note.  Choose from a wide range of scales.  The built-in arpeggio has some pretty flexible parameters – most notably is the ability to program in your own arpeggiated rhythms.  Amongst many other features you can import and export MIDI arrangements as well.

This app does a great job of appealing to casual and music professionals alike.  Pianist Pro not only lives up to its’ successful predecessor but also exceeds it in many ways.  At a price tag of $4.99 you get some real bang for your buck.

Drum Meister for iPad

Drum Meister is a drumming application for the iPad.  It comes from a top-down view and gives you an instant drum kit at your finger tips.  You have four kits to choose from with extra add-on sounds available for each kit.  You also have the ability to move individual drum sounds around and change the size of them to maximize playability.  Much like Garageband (for iPad) the drums are velocity and positionally sensitive.  This means that the sound corresponds to how hard you hit that drum and where exactly you hit that drum.

The program lacks many features that could make it more of a professional drummer’s app, but the stock sounds are decent and if you’re a drummer looking to have a drum kit at your disposal no matter what the situation is then this a cool app to have to have on your iPad.
